Emily is a Temporary Licensed Mental Health Counselor. She earned her Master’s degree in Counseling/ Educational Psychology from Marquette University. She has most recently worked as an Educational Counselor and Instructor for six years at a community college. Prior to that, she worked as a crisis counselor for eight years, primarily with victims of domestic violence, sexual assault, and violent crimes. She also earned an additional K-12 school counseling license through Buena Vista University. 

Emily has a gentle, encouraging, and insightful approach to counseling. She creates a non-judgmental, empathic, safe, and supportive environment. She also likes to focus on skill-building. With her years in the education field, she knows that a good counselor is also a good teacher. She uses a humanistic, cognitive-behavioral (DBT, ACT, and REBT) and Motivational Interviewing style. She tailors her approach to fit the needs of the clients and “meets them where they are.” She holds a particular interest in helping individuals experiencing transitions in their lives, anxiety, depression, adjustment or developmental issues, parenting issues, relationship issues, loss/grief, career transitions, abuse, workplace concerns and burnout, stress management, and cross-cultural counseling, including working with new immigrants. She works with adolescents and adults.

Emily has been trained in Seeking Safety, Strengthening Families, certified sexual assault counselor training, certified domestic abuse victim advocacy training, Prime for Life substance abuse training, and Psychological First Aid.  She has presented at the Iowa Attorney General’s Victim Justice Symposium, and she has provided a number of trainings to schools, colleges, and community organizations regarding interpersonal violence and sexual abuse.
